The film has its defenders. Biographer Michael Korda, the author of Hero: The Life and Legend of Lawrence of Arabia, offers a different opinion. The film is neither "the full story of Lawrence's life or a completely accurate account of the two years he spent fighting with the Arabs". Korda said that criticising its inaccuracy "misses the point". "The object was to produce, not a faithful docudrama that would educate the audience, but a hit picture".[35] Stephen E. Tabachnick goes further than Korda by arguing that the film's portrayal of Lawrence is "appropriate and true to the text of Seven Pillars of Wisdom".[36] David Murphy, historian and author of the 2008 book The Arab Revolt, wrote that although the film was flawed with various inaccuracies and omissions, "it was a truly epic movie and is rightly seen as a classic".[37]

Typically, the movies that attracted me as a child were full of adventure. They transported me to a different world that was complete and perfect. Character was less important than exciting action and panoramic vistas, and the moral choices were pretty easy for a nine-year-old to discern. Particularly memorable was a Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis vehicle called The Vikings. I studied trumpet as a child and later, when I decided to double on French horn, the first thing I taught myself was the theme from that movie!

Peter O'Toole was not yet well known as a movie actor and was also, at 6'2", a full nine inches taller than the tiny T.E. Lawrence. But he bore a strong resemblance to him otherwise, and his screen test impressed Lean. After Albert Finney and Marlon Brando dropped out of the project, O'Toole was cast. His performance earned him an Oscar nomination -- the first of eight (so far) in his career -- and made him a star.

On both sets Disc 1 contains the full 227-minute feature with its full Overture, Intermission and Ent'racte. A new extra is a Picture & Graphics trivia track that plays along with the movie. The track for A Passage to India was very informative, but I can't see myself sitting still for four hours --- I'll sample this one instead. BD Disc 2 has a second new item, an interview piece with Peter O'Toole reminiscing warmly about his experience. The rest of the documentaries and featurettes are repeats from the earlier special edition. 2ff7e9595c
